The preamble of the bill states that the importance of forests must be realized to achieve India’s target of Net Zero Emission by 2070 and to maintain or enhance the forest carbon stocks through ecologically balanced sustainable development.
However, the evidence points in another direction. Predictably, ambiguous phrasing in the bill could allow for misinterpretation and misuse, which is why there has been an outcry since the announcement. As if all that was not enough, the bill controversially renames the act in Sanskrit, in a country where the majority of the population doesn’t speak the language 🤷♀️
Additionally, the bill not only lacks adequate representation of relevant committees but it was sent to a Select committee of Parliament instead of referring it to the Standing Committee on science, technology, environment, and Forest for scrutiny‼️
What is all this, if not a blatant attempt to feed capitalistic greed at the detriment of our forests?
